What is Spec-R?
Intercooler performance is influenced by several factors, including the dimensions of the core and end tanks, tube and fin design, intake airflow, and the amount of time compressed air remains inside the core.
Through extensive testing and refinement, HPI optimised the Spec-R’s side tanks, cooling fins, and tube profiles to distribute compressed air evenly across the core. Compared with HPI’s conventional Spec-S design, the Spec-R provides improved cooling efficiency and more stable intake-air temperatures, supporting greater and more consistent power output.
Cooling Efficiency and Pressure Drop
Effective cooling requires sufficient airflow across the external fins and adequate dwell time for the compressed air inside the tubes to release heat. However, increasing dwell time can also increase pressure drop and reduce throttle response.
The Spec-R is engineered to balance these competing requirements, delivering excellent cooling performance without compromising response.
HPI’s Development Concept
The Spec-R provides consistent cooling during peak-power runs and demanding driving conditions, including spirited street driving, continuous circuit laps, and situations where airflow through the intercooler is limited.
By controlling intake-air temperatures more effectively, the Spec-R allows the engine to deliver its full performance potential beyond standard factory capability. For optimum results, the ECU’s fuel, ignition, and electronic control settings should be recalibrated to take full advantage of the improved cooling performance.
Remarks
- The original protective grille can only be retained when using the 72 mm-thick model.
- Kits for vehicles equipped with the factory Multi-Function Display (MFD) include an intake-air-temperature sensor boss.
